MPLS itself is Service Provider protocol to route traffic over L2 network.  L2VPN or L3VPN the service that transparently route the traffic between your offices or sites.  L2VPN is a direct replacement for Frame Relay or ATM.  This means that your offices or sites will be on the same subnet, and can run routing protocols directly between each other.  L2VPN is completely transparent to the end customer sites, just like Frame Relay or ATM is.  L3VPN adds additional layer 3 hops between your offices.  This means that you would run routing protocols with the Service Provider, they would redistribute your routes into MPLS and then back on the other side.  In general L3VPN requires more design migration than L2VPN does.
